「Practice Diary 14」How many pieces we should practice per day?

2024.01.03 Wednesday 4 hours

  • Clara Schumann Variation on a Theme by Robert Schumann Op.20

  • Rachmaninoff Cello Sonata

  • Chopin Concerto No.1 Op.11

Practice Diary here:

Everything else was okay. I mainly focused on my Clara Schumann. The first half is nearly very fluent to play through. But I didn't manage to get to the Humoresque.. Such a shame. I guess I need to change my focus point tomorrow to Humoresque otherwise I will get into trouble... big trouble... very big trouble........

The second day after the 5h/day resolution I cheated one hour....

Well at least I am being honest, and the truth is I didn't sleep well at all last night probably got too energetic and missed the sleeping point.....The result is that I ended up slept only 2 hours last night and today I spent 5 hours day-sleeping....

And still feel sleepy...gosh.

Okay chatty talking ends here. Today's Q&A is about practice management.

How many pieces should we practice per day?

Many of my students asked me this question before, and this actually depends on how many pieces you need to use in the near future event.

Let take an example. If you are going to take a Grade 5 performance exam with 4 pieces, and you only have 1 hour practice time per day, then I wouldn't suggest you do all the 4 pieces everyday. Because if you do that it basically means that you practiced nothing.

The healthy portion would be:

  • 10-15mins Warm up

  • 25mins Piece 1

  • 25mins Piece 2

And then the second day you do the other two pieces. In this way you are making your practice a circular motion.

If you have a concert coming up, and you need to perform 1 hour music, and you practice time is 5 hours per day, it is still not good to go through everything in one day. Of course I mean detailed practice rather than run through. We all need run through, but that's another issue we talk about it in the future.

The healthy portion would be:

  • 30mins Warm up

  • 1h30mins Piece 1 (10mins music)

  • 1h30mins Piece 2 (10mins music)

  • 1h30mins Piece 3 (10mins music)

Here one piece doesn't not mean a huge sonata lasting half an hour. It might be just one movement of the music, normally lasting around 10mins. Trust me if you really want to make this 10mins music sound good, 1h30mins past like a blink of time, and you might need to require a few of them.....

If you practice in this way, then the practice gets into a healthy circular motion again, and you can make sure that you practice all you music as well as enjoying sufficient time to dig into details and get to a relatively high standard.

Well. If you have 10 hours to practice per day, that would be a different story ....

I just hope your brain won't explode.

😵😵😵

Good Night.
